UBE Sunday September 13, 2026 Vol. 9 Issue 2

The Collect - "Almighty and everlasting God, we thank you for your servant Alexander Crummell, whom you called to preach the Gospel to those who were far off and those who were near. Raise up, in this and every land, evangelists and heralds of your kingdom, that your Church may proclaim the unsearchable riches of our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Preparing for Worship

The congregation is encouraged to read and study the lectionary for the upcoming Sunday. On September 13, we will observe UBE (Union of Black Episcopalians) Sunday and The Feast of Alexander Crummell. The readings are Psalm 19:7-11; Ecclesiasticus 39:6-11; James 1:2-6; Mark 4:21-25.

UBE Sunday is marked by the Union of Black Episcopalians to celebrate the legacy of Alexander Crummell—a 19th-century priest and champion who actively fought racism and barriers within the church. UBE is a national faith-based advocacy organization whose goal is to address racial and social injustices and disparities within and outside our church. “Grace Expectations: What God’s Been Up to Lately”

Won’t you please share how you’re seeing God in your life? Your stories can be little moments or significant moments. It can be shared anonymously if you like. We’d really love to hear it. And I believe that this will be pleasing to God, too. A few weeks ago in church we heard Jesus say: “What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops.” (Mt 10:27) This is one way we can do just that and be a blessing to each other, which ripples ever outward.

GRACE EXPECTATIONS: What’s God been up to lately?

The end of July brought sadness to our family, but also healing, forgiveness, new beginnings and joy!

As my oldest brother, David, passed on July 25th, we were tearful and sad. It is difficult to say goodbye. David’s healing came when he joined Jesus.

There are seven of us, and no extended family members except our children and grandchildren. I am the oldest, David was next, and we are a close-knit family. We get together twice each year and have such fun. The day David died was to be our summer reunion day.

When our nephew Kevin told us the doctor said to call the family, no one was really surprised; Dave has been very ill for several years. Four of us dropped everything and went to David’s bedside, another brother followed shortly. Our last brother was unable to come as his wife was just out of heart surgery, but he was on the phone as we conferred with the Doctor and Kevin, David’s only child. There was nothing to be done for David. Kevin was the one who had to make the decision if Dave was to be removed from life support. Kevin was not ready – so it was decided to wait 72 hours – and see if there were any changes. As we waited, we cried and laughed and enjoyed being together. We visited David and supported Kevin. God was in this. Previously one of my brothers had little good to say about David, and just shut him out. Yet here he was praying with us at David’s bedside! Several of our brothers did not feel a closeness with Dave, but all came together to be there for him, Kevin and each other. Forgiveness and healing.

We talked to Dave, we sang songs in his room, we prayed and we loved on him. We had a chance to say goodbye. Blessings for us all. After 72 hours there was no change and Kevin took his Dad off life support. Pain with love attached.

Dave lasted about 15 hours and when Kevin called me in the wee hours that he got the call that his Dad had passed, he asked if we were still coming to get him so he could join us for reunion! This took me aback – that perhaps Kevin thought without his Dad we would “drop” him! Shock and compassion.

Kevin is a mentally handicapped individual and somwewhat stand-offish with his rambunctious family. In the past, Kevin has been unwilling to pray or have his Dad see a pastor. But as we gathered at the hospital and around David, Kevin seemed alright with us praying and he was part of it! There is still so much unknown for Kevin, but he knows he is not alone, his family is here for him, and we keep telling him God is with him. The day David died he and our Lord gave us the gift of being together, of having Kevin with us, of Father Charlie calling and praying with us and Kevin, of crying and laughing and enjoying our time together. This is God and His loving kindness at His best!

Notes from St. Mark's

Bethany and Feeding program @ St. Augustine's. Please mark your calendars!

St. Mark's will host a Bethany - final location details being arranged - on Friday, September 18th. There will be no Saturday service. That also happens to be Rev. Charlie & Christina's anniversary, so hope you'll join us in celebrating with them.

Also, we hope you'll join us for an amazing opportunity to truly serve those in need - St. Augustine's will host a feeding program for those in the community. This is the day after Bethany, Saturday, September 19th, so since you won't need to do church again, maybe you can join us in being church! We'll be looking for volunteers - and, it's a superb opportunity to invite friends and/or family. Do good, grow the church, and make Jesus smile - how can you beat that? Please be in prayer for this opportunity - we need to be lifted up, especially for important opportunities like this. More details to follow, soon.

Invitation to Compline with St. Mark’s

On Wednesday evenings at 7:00 PM, St. Mark’s hosts a service of healing prayers,

followed by either traditional Compline or New Zealand Night Prayers. This usually takes no more than 20 minutes. They would love to have other members of the PMP join them. A Gentle Reminder

The prelude, the first act of worship, allows the organist to set the tone for the service, inviting worshipers to gather, to transition from their busy lives into a sacred place of communion with God and with each other. It should be understood that the prelude is not just pretty background music, but music that is selected with the specific intent of inviting people into worship, to gather their thoughts and meditate upon the music being offered. All talking should cease to facilitate quiet reflection.

The postlude is the loud and enthusiastic “Amen” to worship! It is a piece of music played after the service is over. Worship ends at the last note of the postlude, just as it begins at the first note of the prelude. The postlude provides the transition from sacred worship back into our varied lives and activities, equipped with renewed courage, energy, and a commitment to serve God and others, until we are able to meet again, as a community, in worship.
